Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)

What is BESS?

Think of a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) as a high-performance energy reservoir for your facility. While solar panels generate power when the sun is shining, BESS captures and stores that energy so you can use it whenever you need it most, whether that’s during peak electricity demand periods to reduce maximum demand or after sunset. It transforms solar from a “daytime-only” benefit into a flexible usage available when needed.

How does BESS make a difference to your business?

Peak Shaving

Reduce high demand charges (now known as network and capacity charges) by using stored energy at the same time when Maximum Demand (MD) occurs.

Energy Storage

Store energy when energy is cheaper or when excess solar is available, and use it during peak hours to reduce energy costs.

Why are more businesses adopting Solar + BESS?
  • Electricity tariffs fluctuate and peak charges are costly
  • Solar energy is not always used when it is generated
  • Grid reliability and compliance requirements are increasing

Visualisation

Starting 1 Jan 2026, solar installations under the Self Consumption (SELCO) framework with capacities of 1MWac and above are required to install Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).

The Cenergi Advantage: BESS with Zero Upfront Cost

Transitioning to advanced storage technology shouldn’t strain your capital. Cenergi offers zero-upfront BESS solutions, including operation and maintenance, integrated with your solar system and tailored to your facility’s energy profile.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. Do I need BESS for my facility?

BESS is required for solar capacities > 1MWac under the SELCO framework. Even where not mandatory, it can help reduce network and capacity charges and energy bills. Cenergi assesses this based on your load profile and regulatory requirements.

2. Is BESS complicated to operate?

No. The system is automatically controlled and monitored. There is no day-to-day operational involvement required from your team.

3. Does BESS affect my normal operations?

No. BESS operates in the background and integrates with your existing electrical system without disrupting daily operations.

4. Is BESS expensive?

Traditionally, installing a BESS requires significant upfront capital. Cenergi removes this barrier by offering ZERO-CAPEX BESS solutions, allowing businesses to benefit from energy storage without the initial investment. It can also be paired with our ZERO-CAPEX solar solution for greater cost & energy optimisation.

5. Is BESS safe?

Yes. Safety is always our Priority. Our systems comply with applicable safety standards and are designed with multiple protection layers, monitoring, and safeguards.

6. What happens if technical regulations change in the future?

Technical regulatory changes generally apply to new applications and do not affect existing approved scheme holders, unless expressly stated by the regulator.
Cenergi designs BESS solutions in compliance with current regulations and applicable scheme requirements, providing certainty for long-term implementation.

7. Why should you consider Cenergi as your BESS partner?

Because we don’t just design systems, we own and operate them. We are currently developing a 36MWp/45MWh hybrid Solar-BESS plant in Selangor, targeted for completion in 2027.

Beyond this, we manage rooftop solar installations across Malaysia, from Perlis to Sabah. This hands-on experience means our engineers focus on what matters most — safe, reliable performance throughout the project’s lifetime.
