Riding on the success of Havys, Cenergi has consequently initiated Sawira, which is an extension of biogas application. As rural agriculture areas are often sizeable, its potential for biogas application is as enormous. For Sawira, Cenergi has entered partnership with Green Lagoon Technology Sdn Bhd (GLTE).
Cenergi has helped to comply to Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) regulations. These new regulations stipulate that effluents from mills must not exceed 10% by volume of total thrash from local and business residents. In its aim to reduce greenhouse emission, MPOB has also mandated that, effective 1 January 2014, all new mills and existing mills that apply for throughput expansion, to install biogas trapping or methane capture facilities.
The solutions offered by Cenergi is to harvest biogas through an in-ground anaerobic digestion method. Cenergi optimised the biodigesters to use organic waste in producing methane, a very clean fuel. When feedstock decomposes under anaerobic conditions (buried beneath other waste in a landfill), it produces methane.
Cenergi at Sawira, operates a 1 MW biogas power plant to harvest biogas from palm oil mill effluents. Operating under a 16-year Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT) agreement, the plant produced 600 – 750 m3 of raw biogas per hour. The treated biogas is channelled to 1 x 1,130 kWe Jenbacher biogas engines to generate electricity, which is then routed to national distribution through a Renewable Energy Power Purchase Agreement (REPPA) with Tenaga Nasional Bhd.
The Sawira biogas project is intended to increase awareness of rural societies, in managing effluents of palm oil mills. Through its biogas substitution, Cenergi has successfully provided electricity to 2,160 houses (equivalent to 540 MWh per month).
From medium to long term, conventional electricity prices are expected to increase significantly. Cenergi is committed in taking early leads in the development of renewable energy ventures. This project represents another renewable energy projects (after Havys), aimed for similar benefits.
